One example is what's being called the bamboo rod effort. Started by John Miska, a wounded serviceman & PHW volunteer, the bamboo rod effort collects old & unwanted bamboo fly rods in order to restore & then donate them to wounded military & veteran personnel. Many of the rods are being restored by Joe Pacacha of Western Pennsylvania who has donated many rods. Both men are working hard to get bamboo rods into the hands of wounded warriors.
They use bamboo rods for this effort because of bamboo's more forgiving nature. As a result, these guys are always on the look out for old bamboo fly rods, no matter what their condition.
